5 Safety Tips for Propane Leaks

At New England Propane, we take propane safety seriously. Propane is incredibly safe, and although leaks are rare, they can be dangerous. It’s important to know how to protect yourself, your family and your home in the event of an emergency.

Propane has a distinctive smell, much like rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray.

If you smell a leak:

  1. Turn off all smoking materials, open flames, or other sources of ignition, including electronics.
  2. Evacuate everyone from the area.
  3. If it is safe to do so, close the gas shutoff valve on your propane tank
  4. After you have left the area, call your local fire department or New England Propane from a mobile phone. Do not return until a qualified technician/first responder has arrived and cleared the area for re-entry.
  5. Make sure you follow up with New England Propane with a complete inspection of your equipment when everything is up and running again.

In case of any emergency, don’t hesitate to call our main office at 203-792-7654.
