Get Comfortable with Your Propane Storage Tank!

“How do I read my propane tank gauge?” “How do I shut off my tank?”

At New England Propane, we understand that you may be uncomfortable dealing with propane storage tanks. We’ve heard the above questions pretty often, and we’re here to help!

First, we want to let you know that it’s easy to check your propane tank gauge to ensure that you’re not running out of fuel, and it’s important to know how to shut off your tank, even if you never need to.

How to Read Your Propane Tank Gauge:

  • Open the lid of the propane tank to see the gauge.
  • If the needle is on 80, that means the tank is full, and as it gets closer to 40, the tank is half-full.
  • If you run out of propane, you must have a qualified professional inspect your system before you turn the gas back on, according to national safety code.

How to Shut Off Your Propane Tank:

  • Open the lid of the propane tank to see the shut-off valve.
  • Turn the valve to the right to shut the tank.
  • If you have more than one tank, shut them all off the same way.
  • If the gas was turned off, national safety code requires that a professional tests your system before turning it back on.

You may want to print out this information and keep it near your propane tank. And, if you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to call us at 203-792-7654 (Danbury/Bethel), 203-869-1881 (Greenwich), 914-666-6219 (New York State) or 203-857-0066 (Norwalk/Westport), or contact us.
