Reduce the Risk of Propane Appliance Malfunctions

The pros at New England Propane are always here to keep your tank full. However, it’s up to you to make sure that your propane appliances are in good working order.

But before we get into what you should do, let’s begin with what you SHOULD NOT DO …

  • If you’re thinking of repairing your propane-powered appliance – any appliance – please DON’T! Even the most die-hard DIYer should not attempt to work on propane appliances! LEAVE ALL REPAIRS TO THE PROS!
  • If you smell a strong odor of gas DON’T try to diagnose the problem! Leave the area immediately and call New England Propane or the fire department from outside the home.

Also be aware that a New England Propane service technician is on call at all times. If you find yourself in an emergency situation with your propane equipment, call us at 203-792-7654 and someone will assist you immediately.

That said, here are some things you can do to reduce the risk of potential propane appliance malfunctions:

  • Handle with care: Handle any propane-powered equipment cautiously and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, especially when lighting a pilot.
  • Ventilation is key: Your propane-fueled appliances need to “breathe.” Make sure all ventilation is clear so that gases can flow easily out of the home. Also, keep the area around your appliances clear to allow for proper airflow.
  • Do not try to modify or repair any parts of propane-fired appliances by yourself!: We’ve already said it above but it bears repeating: Valves, regulators, connectors, controls or other appliance and cylinder and tank parts are off-limits! You definitely DON’T want a gas leak in your home!
  • Have older appliance connectors inspected: If you have propane appliances that are more than 20 years old, have a New England Propane technician inspect the connectors.
  • No heavy propane gas cylinders in the house!: Never store or use propane gas cylinders larger than one pound inside the home.
  • Keep the grill outdoors: Never operate a propane-powered gas grill inside the home.
  • Store flammable liquids away from propane-fueled appliances: Never place gasoline, paint thinner, and other flammable liquids nearby – your appliance’s pilot light could ignite the fumes and vapors from these liquids.
  • Take advantage of our GASCheck™ (Gas Appliance System Check) preventive maintenance for residential systems, and annual equipment inspections for our commercial clients.

At New England Propane, your safety is our #1 priority. Whether it’s communicating important propane information or offering tips on operating and reading your propane tank, we want to ensure that all our customers understand how to properly maintain their propane appliances and enjoy a healthy, safe environment.
